Chris Holtmann’s biggest (only?) redeeming quality as a coach is that he always seems to get his team to the NCAA Tournament.
I think it’s generally bullshit to praise someone for this when making the NCAA Tournament should be the absolute bare minimum. I didn’t know too many kids in high school that had people falling down at their feet after earning straight Cs.
But man, I’d kill for “bare minimum” right about now.
We’re entering one of the most exciting weeks on the sports calendar and I have no rooting interest because my team full of top-60 freshmen and experienced veterans somehow finished 13th in the Big Ten.
Oh well. I guess that’s why God invented gambling – it creates the purest of rooting interests. I’m sending Chris Holtmann an invoice for my inevitable losses.

With Ohio State recklessly giving Chris Holtmann a fresh contract literally last year, the only way the Buckeyes were realistically going to be able to get rid of him this year was to convince some other school to hire him off our hands.
And for a brief moment, there was hope!
… and then just like that, the hope was gone.
“I’m not going to Notre Dame,” Holtmann told The Dispatch in the wake of Weiss’ tweet. “I stand by what I publicly said. I’m committed to being here.”
I sincerely am relatively optimistic about the future of Ohio State basketball given the talent returning and the talent coming in. But I can’t help but imagine how much more optimistic I would be with this same talent and a different coach!
But I know damn well I won’t be getting that wish for like three years.

Ohio State basketball’s months-long bed shit may have taken most of the joy out of March, but I do have some good news! It looks like a guy who used to play for Ohio State’s football team is very good!

The Carolina Panthers acquired the No. 1 overall pick in a trade up with the Chicago Bears, and the consensus belief is that the Panthers will use that pick to draft the former Ohio State quarterback. Stroud is now the betting favorite to be the first player drafted, and longtime Panthers beat reporter Joseph Person reported shortly after the trade that “the sense around the league” is they traded up for Stroud.
That belief is reflected by the many mock drafts that have been released over the past four days since that draft-altering deal. Among 22 mock drafts we compiled that have been published or updated by media outlets that cover the NFL draft since Friday night’s trade, 15 of them have Stroud going with the No. 1 overall pick – which would make him the fourth No. 1 overall pick in Ohio State history along with Tom Cousineau, Dan Wilkinson and Orlando Pace.
I have two reactions to this.
First, this is awesome and well-deserved. C.J. Stroud is, in my opinion, the best and most talented pure quarterback in Buckeye football history, and I think he’s the best NFL quarterback prospect Ohio State has ever produced. He earned this.
Second, Stroud becoming the first Ohio State quarterback ever to go No. 1 overall after not winning a damn thing during his two seasons as a starter would be perfectly on brand for how things have turned out for him, and would sting tremendously.
One day, I hope that I will be able to remember C.J. Stroud’s career fondly with no what-ifs. But today is not that day, and tomorrow ain’t looking too great either.
