Breakfast Kegger: The Portal Giveth

The Transfer Portal

My opinion on Ohio State’s general transfer portal strategy is well documented. I wish they were more aggressive, I think they need to place more emphasis on scouting and recruiting the portal, and I think they need to be more willing to simply bring players in and let them compete for spots.

That said, I gotta give credit where credit is due. Ohio State had a position of massive importance that was in desperate need of a player who can come in and make an immediate impact. And the Buckeyes went out and got the best player available.

Ja’Had Carter was the top-rated safety in the transfer portal for a reason. He’s extremely versatile and has experience in the slot, at a true safety position, and even at outside cornerback. He projects best as a direct replacement for Tanner McCalister, but you could put him almost anywhere on the field and he could do it comfortably.

So unless Lathan Ransom declares for the NFL Draft, your starting safeties for next year are likely Carter, Ransom and Sonny Styles. And I feel oddly optimistic about that.

  • NOAH RUGGLES MOM IS EVERYONE’S MOM

My dear mother is no longer with us, but when she was, she was a far more prolific “Personal Things on Facebook” poster than I will ever be at posting about Buckeye Football.

So I totally and completely empathize with Noah Ruggles when he logged onto Twitter and found this a couple of days after missing the biggest kick of his life.

This is like, word for word what my mom would have written if I publicly fucked up in a way that disappointed the masses.

But in my case, it would probably be like accidentally uploading a picture of my penis in place of the header image.

“I appreciate the grace many of you have shown. Kevin takes full responsibility for his actions. He will forever be grateful to the people who gave this platform even though we all knew it would eventually end in disaster.”

  • SOMETIMES, THE RIGHT THING SUCKS ASS

Ohio State made the objectively correct decision not to allow Marvin Harrison Jr. to return to the game after he was knocked out by a hit that we’re told we are expected to believe was not forcible contact to his head.

The move probably cost the Buckeyes the game and a shot at the national championship. And for that reason, it’s been pretty universally praised by everyone from the national media to Georgia fans watching on television.

I wouldn’t change Ohio State’s decision on Marv for anything, because it was 100 percent correct. And the praise here is well deserved, because you know damn well that there are plenty of teams that would have handed him his helmet and told him to go make the big play. I’m proud of that.

But some day in the near future, I would very much like it if my team were praised for winning important football games and finishing atop the recruiting rankings instead of just for doing things the right way. That doesn’t feel like too much to ask!

Also, I firmly believe that the only reason they shared this random message from an anonymous Georgia fan with a degree that’s semi-applicable at best is that it included the line “clearly your team was the better team last night and dominating the game with him playing.”

And you know what? I get it. I’m petty too. Talk that subtle shit.
